Om Puri, who gave countless memorable performances in movies of diverse genres, died at his Mumbai home on Friday morning after a massive heart attack.
He was 66.
"He passed away this morning due to a massive heart attack at his residence in suburban Andheri. It's shocking," a family source said.
From Bollywood to Hollywood, from independent to art films, the actor, known for his versatility, gave several acclaimed performances.
He was awarded the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian award, in 1990.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Puri's demise and recalled his long career in theatre and films.
Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar, Anupam Kher, Javed Akhtar and Mahesh Bhatt expressed grief over Puri's demise, calling it a huge loss to Indian cinema.
Born in Ambala, Haryana, in a Punjabi family, Puri graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He was also an alumnus of the 1973 class of National School of Drama, where Naseeruddin Shah was a co-student.
He made his film debut in the 1976 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal.
Some of his most notable films include Bhavni Bhavai, Sadgati, Ardh Satya, Mirch Masala, Dharavi, Aakrosh, Maachis, Gupt, Dhoop, Yuva, Don, Agneepath, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and others. He earned international fame in many British films, such as My Son the Fanatic, East Is East, The Parole Officer and others.
He also appeared in Hollywood films like City of Joy, Wolf, The Ghost and the Darkness among others.

New Delhi: Veteran actor Om Puri passes away on Friday morning.  The actor was 66 years-old. 
According to sources, the cause of death is heart attack.
He appeared in mainstream commercial Pakistani, Indian, and Hollywood, Independent films  His credits also include appearances in American films. He has been awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India.
Om Puri was one of those actors who have balanced their career between art house, mainstream and international films.
The veteran actor, a recipient of Padma Shri, started his journey as an actor with a Marathi film “Ghashiram Kotwal” in 1972 and continued acting in films like “Aakrosh”, “Ardh Satya” and “Arohan” among others and won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award and National Film Award for Best Actor respectively.

Veteran Indian actor Om Puri, star of British hit East is East, has died aged 66, a family member told the BBC.
Puri suffered a heart attack at his residence in Mumbai early on Friday, reports say.
Om Puri, who acted in both mainstream and art films, was known for his gritty performances in a number of landmark Indian films in the 1980s.
He also appeared in the British TV series Jewel in the Crown and the film City of Joy.
Puri was awarded an honorary OBE for his contribution to the British film industry in 2004.
He was known for his performances in critically acclaimed films like Ardh Satya and Paar and the satirical Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.
Puri also worked in a number of foreign films, including The Reluctant Fundamentalist, East is East, and most recently in The Hundred-Foot Journey.
